14th January 2011

I am heartily sick of wading through mud! It is lovely not having to cut through ice in the troughs and buckets but it has rained now for the last three days. The donkeys do not appreciate the weather at all and everything is so damp and filthy. Emily and two of her friends have come to visit and Daisy and I cooked supper for everyone last night but I was in bed early as I have been waking up at 5.00am most mornings as that is when Ginny usually has a seizure. We have been back to the vets with her and are waiting for the results of blood tests, as I now think that she has two problems. Her heart is functioning better on the new meds but the seizures haven’t stopped although they are definitely less frequent.

Mags and I are busy working in the office getting an online shop together and Liz (our brilliant webmaster) is updating the websites with new courses and new articles that I am writing. Thank you Liz for your ongoing help and support - it is much appreciated.

Marie Miller (my co-author) and I are planning some modules on dog training and behaviour and I will be doing the same on the equine front. Clients, both canine and equine, start coming in again next week and I am looking forward to filming with Fiona on Tuesday. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas too. Here is to a Happy New Year for us all!

10th January 2011

I am back at home after a weekend away in Suffolk. Jon and I went up to my mother’s cottage to do some work on the water supply and make sure it had survived the cold spell. (Sadly my mother died a year ago.) I was attending a workshop today at Wood Green Animal Shelter in Cambridgeshire so it was the perfect opportunity to visit Suffolk and, of course, Miss Cookie Dough Dynamo came with us.

I spent a lovely two days dog walking and tidying and Emily drove up from Surrey to stay as well. In a way I wish that the cottage was nearer so that I could visit more often but at least it means that it is far enough away to really switch off from all my work commitments and I hope that I can spend a week here finishing my book. It is impossible to write at home or at the farm as there are always so many other things to do and it is really difficult to find a good block of time when I can immerse myself in writing. I always seem to get the perfect paragraph just as someone asks a question, the phone rings or an animal needs to be let out and my brain immediately deletes all the words!

The workshop was on Dog Law and the speaker was the brilliant Trevor Cooper. If you ever need advice or legal help on anything related to dogs, he is the man.

2nd January 2011

I have had a lovely day on the yard and as the snow has gone it almost feels like spring. The birds are singing and the grass looks so green as we haven’t seen it for several weeks. I know it is only January but it really doesn’t feel as though spring is that far away. I may be very optimistic on this one but I think the break over Christmas has allowed me to recharge my batteries and I feel very enthused about the coming year. Definitely looks as though there will be more travel on the cards with trips to Poland, Romania and Holland already in the diary. I am also planning different workshops this year and also need to get writing. My agent has moved to another agency and I am going to meet up with her in January to talk though some more ideas. Our daughter Emily is also filming in February - both Tony and Emily have parts in two different films - so we are all looking forward to 2011.

1st January 2011

It’s a new year. Hurrah! Our New Year’s Eve was a very peaceful affair. Tony and I tidied the house, did paperwork and set goals for 2011 then drank our first glass of champagne at midnight as I was holding the phone to the television so that my sister who lives in Connecticut could hear the chimes of Big Ben in London. I stayed at home whilst Tony went to pick Daisy up from a party as our elderly dog Ginny has started having seizures and we had a couple more glasses of champagne when they came back home before heading to bed at 2.30am. I seem to be turning into a night owl these days and am thinking I might retire, but I know I would soon get bored so will put that idea on hold for the time being.

We had a lovely week between Christmas and the New Year with Emily, Daisy and Tony’s family. I haven’t seen my sister for months though and with Ginny being unwell it doesn’t look as though we can fly out to see her either which is sad as I miss her and our nephews. I hate it when our animals become old or ill. They are such a huge part of our family. Not that Ginny is distressed in any way and our vet is great with her and has put her on new heart meds which definitely seem to have helped.

29th December 2010

Christmas is over, sort of, and it was perfect. Everything ran like clock work and I left the majority of horses out over the two days as the weather was cold but dry. If I am having horses standing eating hay they may as well be outside eating so that they can move around if they get too cold. Tina came in to help (she is a star) but it took the skills of Jon with a stone cutter to ensure that the troughs were free from ice. Well for a few hours anyway.

It was glorious having a white Christmas and as my daughter Daisy and I got into the Christmas spirit early, and while we usually peak by Christmas Day, this time, with the snow still on the ground our Christmas spirit is still with us until well after.

Tony’s brother is coming tomorrow and our nieces are coming tonight so our festivities are continuing which I love. Tony is working on a new film in January and my diary is already filling up even though I wanted to keep January quiet to catch up with emails and clients and to up date the website, so for now, we are enjoying a nice long break before it all kicks off again in the New Year.
